LGBTI-INCLUSIVE OBSERVATION MISSION OF MYANMAR (LIEOMM)

2020 — Founding of the LGBTI-Inclusive Election Observation Mission of Myanmar (LIEOMM)

On September 15, 2020, CAN-Myanmar spearheaded a historic initiative by founding the LGBTI-Inclusive Election Observation Mission of Myanmar (LIEOMM). Established as Myanmar’s first-ever LGBTI domestic observation mission, LIEOMM was created to promote free, fair, inclusive, and credible elections across the nation.

To ensure broad community representation and nationwide coverage, LIEOMM collaborated with 20 LGBTI organizations and independent activists from across the country. Through CAN-Myanmar, the mission successfully secured official accreditation cards from the Union Election Commission (UEC) of Myanmar.

With full accreditation, LIEOMM deployed 100 trained LGBTI observers to monitor electoral processes across 10 major states and regions:

  • States: Kachin, Kayin, Mon, and Shan States
  • Regions: Sagaing, Bago, Magway, Ayeyarwady, Mandalay, and Yangon Regions

This landmark effort marked a monumental step forward for civil society, establishing a direct platform for LGBTIQA+ citizens to participate actively in national democratic processes and human rights observation.
